MusiCares Changes Lives

A decade ago, musician Mark Josefsberg* was afraid that his life was over. A vibes player, he experienced sharp pain in his hands when he played.

He tried many types of therapy in order to alleviate the situation, but nothing helped. Finally, he came to MusiCares, and to avoid surgery, requested a grant to try Alexander Technique — a system of retraining the body and aligning posture to achieve a healthier musculoskeletal balance. He was given a grant to pay for 10 sessions of Alexander Technique training. His condition improved markedly, so much so that he decided to learn more about the technique in order to continue his recovery. Today, Josefsberg is an Alexander Technique instructor who works with other musicians and their postural problems. "MusiCares provided the seed money that changed my life," said Josefsberg. He continues to play music when he is not working with his Alexander Technique clients. Read more about Josefsberg at
