The Passim Folk Music and Cultural Center in Cambridge, Mass., and the Institute for Music & Brain Science in Boston, are recent GRAMMY Foundation Grant Program recipients for Preservation Planning and Research, respectively. The Passim Folk Music and Cultural Center will create a plan to reformat fragile live performance and field recordings from Cambridge's Club 47 early years as well as complimentary oral histories from 1990–present. The institute's project will test whether music decreases behavioral, neurophysiological and endocrinological pain and stress caused by medically necessary procedures such as the heel stick blood draw in critically ill premature infants. In addition, the institute will test the hypothesis that humans innately prefer consonant over dissonant music. The New York Chapter extends congratulations to these GRAMMY Foundation grant recipients.

Members of the New York Chapter's Advocacy Committee recently traveled to Albany, New York, on two different occasions to lobby in opposition of Governor David Patterson's proposed state arts funding cuts. On Jan. 13 the committee met with legislative leaders from the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate and representatives from the governor's office to lend The Recording Academy's collective voice to approximately 600 state arts organizations opposing the cuts proposed to the New York State Council on the Arts.
During the committee's second trip to Albany on Feb. 3, Chapter Governor and GRAMMY-winning singer/songwriter Tom Chapin was invited by Sen. José M. Serrano (D-N.Y.) to perform a song at the first-ever state arts funding joint hearing. Chapin performed a song he recently co-wrote, "You Can't Spell Smart Without Art."
